At this point of the book, I always sit back and try to imagine the scene: Gandalf, with his gray cape, smoking his pipe in a contemplative way, as he watches Bilbo’s old landrover climbing up the hills of Shire, in a crackling and gasping manner. A bit later, having organized the mission that is going to seal the future:

"...Look out for me, especially at unlikely times! Good-bye!"

The landcruiser vanishes with haste into the dark woods…and the great adventure begins!
